How Romance Investment Scams Work

Romance investment scams combine two forms of manipulation: an emotional relationship and a fraudulent financial opportunity. Understanding how the two are typically woven together can help make sense of an experience that often feels confusing in hindsight, without suggesting the victim should have somehow known better at the time.

The relationship comes first

These scams typically begin as what appears to be a genuine connection — on a dating platform, social media, or a messaging app. The person behind the profile invests real time and effort in building trust, often over weeks or months, before money is ever mentioned. This is a deliberate strategy: a strong emotional bond makes later financial requests far more persuasive.

Reasons rarely start with investing directly

An initial request for money is more often framed as a personal emergency — a medical bill, a business problem, or travel costs to finally meet in person. Only once trust is established, and often after a smaller request has already been fulfilled, does the conversation shift toward a shared investment or cryptocurrency opportunity.

The “opportunity” is introduced through the relationship

The other person may claim to have a background in trading, cryptocurrency or finance, and offer to help you invest — sometimes on a platform they say they use themselves, or by “trading on your behalf”. This lends the scheme an air of credibility a cold-call investment pitch would not have, precisely because it comes from someone you have come to trust.

The financial pattern is familiar

From this point, the pattern often resembles other investment scams: an account or app showing growing balances, encouragement to deposit more, and — eventually — obstacles when a withdrawal is attempted. Our guide on how cryptocurrency investment scams work covers this financial pattern in more detail.

Why it can be hard to see clearly

Because the emotional relationship and the financial request are intertwined, doubting one can feel like doubting the other. Many victims describe feeling as though questioning the investment would mean questioning the relationship itself, which makes it significantly harder to step back and evaluate the situation objectively than it would be with a purely financial pitch.

If this describes your situation

There is no judgment in recognising this pattern after the fact — these relationships are often built by people skilled at exactly this. If you have lost money in a situation like this, our romance scam recovery page explains what information is useful for a case assessment, and the process is handled with the same discretion and care regardless of how the situation unfolded.
